Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2020

Saving the lives of women young and old

Amidst years of work to make women aware of risks, treatment, and prevention of breast cancer, the disease continues to be the most common cancer affecting women and the second leading cause of cancer death for women. Yet early diagnosis and treatment provide a 99% five-year survival rate for breast cancer.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October, experts strive to make women aware of their ability to address their risk and stay ahead of this disease. This includes women of all ages. While women 45 and older are encouraged to get annual mammograms, women younger than 45 also are impacted by breast cancer.

Annually, about 11% of new cases of breast cancer in the U.S. are diagnosed in women younger than 45. The impact of such a diagnosis, as well as treatment and prognosis, can be overwhelming for young women. The Federal Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women continues to meet to develop initiatives that support the mental health and quality of life of these women and understand the genetics related to this disease in younger women.

Mammogram screening for breast cancer provides the most accurate information for doctors, with advanced technology detecting even the smallest abnormalities. For this reason, it is crucial that women of all ages understand their risk and discuss those issues with their doctors. Women at higher risk for developing breast cancer based on family history or genetics should be screened annually regardless of age.

What women of all ages should know about breast cancer risk

  • Certain genetic mutations as well as two or more first-degree relatives who have had breast cancer put you at higher risk.
  • Self-exams will help you know your breasts and recognize an abnormality early.
  • Even minor changes in your breasts should be discussed with your doctor.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight and limiting alcohol consumption can reduce your risk.
  • Breast feeding for as long as possible may help reduce your risk.
  • Menopausal women should discuss with their doctors the benefits and risks of hormone therapy, including dosage and duration, as it can cause increased risk.
  • Support groups are available for women of all ages who are facing a breast cancer diagnosis.
